AN URBAN STORY IN A FAIRY WORLD

I had a rough month and unfortunately, this kept me away from books. So I wanted to get back with a nice and easy-to-read novel. After searching my bookshelf for the perfect story I remembered how a fellow Badger read “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman and really enjoyed it. Because of this, I decided to give ” My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry” by the same author a chance.

A small introduction

The book starts in a hilarious way. From the first page, you will meet Elsa, a seven-year-old Swedish girl, who is taken by the police along with her grandmother because the later threw monkey poop in some local police officer when trying to break into the Zoo.
Being a very smart and different kid, Elsa is bullied at school and her only friend is Granny who created a special world for her granddaughter in order for her to find comfort and to feel welcomed. It is called the “Land-of-Almost-Awake” and the beauty of it is that in this fairy tale world, everybody is different and special, just like Elsa.

Having a grandmother is like having an army. This is a grandchild’s ultimate privilege: knowing that someone is on your side, always, whatever the details. Even when you are wrong. Especially then, in fact. A grandmother is both a sword and a shield.

Unfortunately, life takes its course and Elsa’s grandmother loses her fight with cancer. From this point, the book takes you through a tone of emotions. I loved the way Fredrik Backman introduces step by step the characters without losing the fairy atmosphere from the beginning of the book.
